Reed and Sue took a while to figure out their powers but Ben and Johnny really hit the ground running.
I'm going to retcon that Reed is actually using this as an opportunity to dig on Johnny for being defeated by Doctor Doom using nothing but asbestos ropes.
On a related note, RiffTrax did a brilliant homage to this cover for one of the chapters to an old Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) serial. The poster to every chapter is an homage to a famous comic book cover, all by different artists. This is by Len Peralta.
