I hope the success of Jazz is Dead/Jazz Está Morto definitively proves to bookers & promoters that Latinx & Brazilian culture reach far beyond the Latinx communities in Canada.
One of the most inspiring shows about Marcos Valle’s show last night was to see the usual suspects of every Brazilian event combined with young DJs/beatmakers/collectors who discovered this music through sampling.
What an emotional moment last night. In the crowd of Nomadic Massive’s 20th anniversary, I felt a sense of nostalgic pride. Conversations flowed easily in multiple languages, like the verses on stage. THIS is the Montreal I moved into; THIS is the city I remember; THIS is the city I call home.

It merely took the most egregiously bad faith series of noise complaints against a venue with 110 years of history to acknowledge that applying this noise ordinance to venues is ridiculous. Celebrate the small and tardy victories, I suppose. cultmtl.com/2024/09/city...
The City of Montreal will exempt music venues, bars and restaurants from the noise bylaw that facilitated legal challenges against La Tulipe.

So someone buys a condo - that’s not supposed to be a condo, and not supposed to be zoned residential - beside a building that has been a venue for over a century, in an otherwise commercially zoned area… and the venue has to close? Bravo Montreal. Chapeau.

I had a shuttle driver last week in Paris, a Portuguese man who grew up in France. When we asked where he was from, he said, “sou estrangeiro,” as a joke tinged with sadness. He was too Portuguese to be French, and too French to be Portuguese. So much emotion was conveyed in those two words.
TIL there are three (!) Schwartz’s Delis in Paris and as a Montrealer I feel strangely compelled to go.
