With songs titled Where We Going To and In The Night Kitchen, Standing VIII Count had a sort of "eclecticore" sound combining a moody metal sound like Type O Negative and faster, poppier rock like the White Stripes (they played both Black No. 1 and Seven Nation Army in practice sessions).

Album covers for the demo CDs JD Buffington made through the years for Standing VIII Count, the band. In the upper left is a mostly white cover with two small flags (an American flag toothpick, and an S8C banner made with staples and tape) and small “S8C” typed below. The upper right is striped top to bottom black, red, black with Muhammad Ali in negative color, appearing blue, over the red banner, “Standing VIII Count” in Papyrus is on the bottom black banner. The lower left is three obfuscated photos of members of the band, “Standing VIII Count” in Papyrus again, and another Ali silhouette in red over a white banner. The lower right is a black CD with “S8C” on top and “Karoke” on bottom in Papyrus.

Sadly, those dreams dwindled as did members. Never having given up on writing fiction, JD decided to focus his creative energy on the written word. Standing 8 Count Publications holds onto the notion of getting back up, shaking it off, and getting back into the fight.
