Having feelings about this old picture of me and the time lost.

This was almost half a lifetime ago. But when I look at this picture today, you know what I see? I see me. I see Summer, getting a chance to come out of her shell and be part of the world for a little bit before I put her away again for a while. At the time, I couldn't see her, me, for who she/I was.

But look at this girl. There's a light in her eyes. There's an uncertainty in her pose, but at the same time there's a defiance, as if to say "I'm still new to all this, but I am here. I belong here."

I sometimes wonder what would have been had I recognized myself back then.

a part of me aches for her because she deserved better than to be put away so many times until I was ready to see that she was me and I was putting myself away every time I put her away. It's been 5 years since I realized that I couldn't keep putting her away now, and almost 3 years since I fully embraced that she really is me. And all I want is to make up for all the time she lost.
