Truthfully, I'm not sure. The best I can guess is that it's somewhere down the evolutionary path from ambrosia salad and fruit salad, Ambrosia salad often uses a creamy "dressing" like whipped cream, and frequently includes marshmallows. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambrosi...
