🚨 new preprint! 📝 Challenges for a Computational Explanation of Flexible Linguistic Inference, by Marieke Woensdregt, Mark Blokpoel, @irisvanrooij.bsky.social@andreaeyleen.bsky.socialdoi.org/10.31234/osf...

Figure 3: Illustration of how the explanandum and the constraints on the explanans relate to each other. The explanandum is characterised by three core properties. To explain this explanandum, a theory has to be able to capture these three properties (i.e., be generatively sufficient; Blokpoel, 2018). Evaluating the theory along the explanatory desiderata will help make sure that it really provides an explanation of the phenomenon of interest, and making sure the theory fits within the cognitive constraints will help make sure it can be plausibly realised by human cognition and the brain. Do we have good and bad days for cognitive performance? Our new preprint, led by Michael Aristodemou, set to find out, testing day-to-day stability of working memory (n=4150;t =1,048,576) and nonverbal reasoning performance (n=449;t=454,913) using hierarchical modeling osf.io/preprints/ps...

Kazanina & Poeppel (2023) argue that spatial cell types in navigation areas offer the neural ingredients for a Language of Thought (LoT). In this commentary, I give four arguments against this proposal. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
