"Jenrick likes attacking ā€˜Metropolitan elitesā€™. He is a Cambridge-educated lawyer with two homes in central London... To loosely quote Gilbert and Sullivan... he is, in fact, the very model of a modern metropolitan."

Englishness is under attack, claims Nigel Farage and Robert Jenrick

Robert Jenrick and Nigel Farage claim to fear the demise of our national identity and culture, but they canā€™t even define what they are

Among other things, this is just Grade A political ineptitude. You've carved out a space where no matter how difficult you are internally the whips have to give you softer treatment, it's right at the start of a five year parliament, etc etc.

I am starting to wonder if the issue is just there is a group of people who were convinced they could work under the Tories for their whole career & are struggling with finding out thatā€™s not true www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

A bit late, my two favourite bits of Starmerā€™s speech to conference. First, a shout out to (Iā€™m pretty sure) the first party leader to tell their conference that they love Beethoven, Brahms, and Shostakovich.

Because Conference, one of the other things that gave me great joy as a kid ā€“ as well as the football, obviously ā€“ was the flute. Donā€™t think you were expecting that, were you.

But seriously ā€“ the flute gave me so many opportunities. My first ever trip abroad was to Malta with the Croydon Youth Philharmonic Orchestra.

And Iā€™m sure everyone here will know the feeling of being drawn in by music.

Getting lost in something bigger than yourself. Or being moved by a book, a painting, a play. Even now I turn to Beethoven or Brahms in those moments when, how to put it, the reviews arenā€™t so good. Iā€™ve got some Shostakovich lined up for tomorrow.

But these early encounters with art and culture, they change us forever, and we are brilliant at them in this country. Brilliant.
