The problem here might not be ChatGPT the problem might be that this student is working full time while studying. So many students really don't have time to learn the things they came to university for. The aim becomes a degree, not the education. ChatGPT is a route to that
Where we’re at now, like it or not. 😑 A history major “runs his assigned readings through ChatGPT to generate summaries of the text, answer specific Q, & identify quotes. ‘I don’t have the time to literally read every single word that gets assigned,’he said.” www.insidehighered.com/news/student...
Students are turning to YouTube, podcasts and ChatGPT-crafted summaries rather than actually reading their assignments for class. Professors are unsure how to adapt.
Student fees & student loans create a transactional view of studying that ChatGPT responds to. It's part of the same ecosystem as Turnitin
Yes indeed. Also, I know of some educators who actually promote (or were at one point promoting) this as a "useful" function of ChatGPT. So if you are short on time or finding it tough *and* someone's told you that...
If you take the commodification of higher ed to logical outcomes, this is just students practicing using a tool they’ll encounter in the workplace, like Excel. I blame those who have reduced higher ed to biz apprenticeships rather than a path to a more enlightened person. #HumanitiesFan
Yes! This! It's not even a new problem. It's been a joke since i was in highschool - if you add up every hour of assigned reading it's literally impossible even with no job and no extra activities. The reality is nuanced but also brutal, i would never personally do this but i do understand it
