Today marks the start of Black History Month in the UK. This month we celebrate the contribution Black people have made to our country, and recognise the work we still need to do to tackle racism, injustices and inequalities still prevailing.

It’s an honour to be elected Chair of the Women and Equalities Committee. Thank you to all who supported me, and to Kate Osborne, whose campaigns on equality and especially non-consensual imagery continue to inspire. I look forward to meeting the committee members and starting our crucial work.
In 2019, I was the first East and Southeast Asian MP in my party. If elected, I would be the first BAME MP to serve as Chair of this committee. I hope my colleagues will support me on Wednesday. We have so much to make progress on, together.
People with disabilities also deserve a country that works for them. I have worked with charities on accessible high streets, and successfully campaigned for lifts at my local station.
This also means taking seriously hate crime against LGBTQ+ people, working alongside people from all communities on the issues they face.
Building these communities means tackling hate crime. I have worked with organisations to tackle online hate while on the Online Safety Bill Committee and continue the fight against Islamophobia as chair of APPG for British Muslims.
