🌱🌍🌿🍄🌾Alder tree growing at the edge of Ullswater, UK. Alnus genus, birch family Betulaceae. Species throughout northern temperate areas. Nodules on roots shelter bacteria Frankia alni that fix nitrogen and aid tree to grow in nutrient poor situations.

Small tree on micro-island at edge of large lake with steep mountainside behind. Sky blue with grey clouds.
Close-up of nodules on alder tree. Formed as symbiosis with bacteria. Looks like clusters of short fingers.

A stunning statement from the American Association of University Professors, Barnard and Columbia Chapters. “We have lost confidence in our president and administration, and we pledge to fight to reclaim our university.” drive.google.com/file/d/1rciM...

Joint Statement by the American Association of University Professors, Barnard and Columbia Chapters
April 19, 2024
The American Association of University Professors has defined two central pillars of higher education in America: academic freedom and shared governance: the freedom to teach and do research without interference from entities external to the profession; and the "inescapable interdependence among governing board, administration, faculty, students." In the last three days, Columbia University President Shafik and her administration have seriously violated both.
We are shocked at her failure to mount any defense of the free inquiry central to the educational mission of a university in a democratic society and at her willingness to appease legislators seeking to interfere in university affairs. She has demonstrated flagrant disregard of shared governance in her acceptance of partisan charges that anti-war demonstrators are violent and antisemitic and in her unilateral and wild

As director of CESAB, I'm incredibly proud to share the latest article of our postdocs today in Ecology Letters. 👏 They call for a more ethical academic publishing landscape but also ask to not let only the Early Career Researchers pay the price of this paradigm shift ! doi.org/10.1111/ele.... 🧪🌍

The publish-or-perish culture in academia has catalysed the development of an unethical publishing system. This system is characterised by the proliferation of journals and publishers unaffiliated with learned societies or universities— that maintain extremely large revenues and profit margins diverting funds away from the academic community. Early career researchers (ECRs) are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of this publishing system because of intersecting factors, including pressure to pursue high impact publications, rising publication costs and job insecurity. Moving towards a more ethical system requires that scientists advocate for structural change by making career choices that come with risks, many of which disproportionately impact ECRs. We illuminate major issues facing ECRs in Ecology and Evolution under the current publishing system, and propose a portfolio of actions to promote systemic change that can be implemented by ECRs and established researchers.

Hello! Not only does Grammarly steal your work to train it's bot, but now it tells you lies and tells you to pay if you want the 'correct' suggestion. This example came from someone else. Get this shit off your phones and delete it from your computers.

Pale violet from mussel shells. There is something beautiful about colour when you know its origins - it was made in the ocean under the waves.
