Closeup of the information sign in front of the redwood turnout.

A white metal sign with information about the wooden structure behind it. The background is a faded picture of a black and white cow with long curved horns facing towards the camera.

Text reads:

Greener Pastures
Can you guess what the structure in front of you was once used for? It is called a redwood turnout, and it helped grow grass in the desert.

A Turn for the Better.
A turnout is a structure that controls water flow. Installed in the canal bank, this redwood turnout has gates that were raised and lowered to stop and start the flow of water. It helped move water from the Refuge's West Canal to the West Pasture.

Low-Cost Creation
The simple wood structures provided a cost-effective method to grow food for the cattle that were allowed to graze on the Refuge. Large areas of unlevel ground were easily flooded without the expense of building large concrete structures.

(continues)
Included is a black and white photo of the structure in its original position as it was being installed between the canal and the pasture. Large piles of dirt are on either side of it and two mean are inspecting it.

Caption below reads:
In the 1950's, the Nevada Fish and Game Commission and the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District worked with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to install this and other redwood turnout structures on the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge.

Be very very quiet everyone. One's sleeping. 🪶

Perched near the trunk of a large aspen/birch tree, amid the bright green leaves backlit by the sun, two great horned owls are nestled down for the day. One is above the other, it's striped chest visible, head angled slightly to the side as it rests with its eyes closed. The other is lower, it's dark brown back towards the camera, head slightly turned to show the dark outline around the face and one bright yellow eye watching the weird human.

Saw two Merlins today, first time seeing them out at Stillwater. At first thought it was a kestrel, but then got a closer look and nope. Neat watching this little falcon. 🪶

A small brown striped Merlin perches on the thick bare branch of a tree, its shiny black eye looking down towards something below it. Its brown head has a white stripe over the eye and a dark brown cheek mark going down along side its throat. The full chest is white with a heavy striped pattern. Bright yellow talons grip the flaking bark of the tree. A clear blue sky fills the background.
A small brown striped Merlin perches on a thin bare weathered grey branch. It is stretching, the right wing open over the top of the flared tail with the right leg lifted, all the weight balanced on the left foot as it grips the branch with yellow talons. The head is turned to face the camera, an intense stare from two dark black eyes boring into the lens. The position reveals the dark brown cheek mark on both sides of the throat, the heavily striped brown chest, and the dark brown undertail with thin white bands going across the feathers. The background is filled with a clear blue sky.

HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT Look who we caught today! It’s a hatch year Eastern Towhee (born this year). A female would be brown and a male would be black, and this bird has female characteristics on one side and male on the other— a likely bilateral gynandromorph!!!

Bird with a white belly and orange sides, and a half black half brown face

A pair of snowy egrets were moving together and I managed to click the shutter at the right moment. 🪶

Against a wall of dark green reeds, two bright white snowy egrets walk together, the smaller one in front of the larger one. They are both in the same pose, beaks lowered slightly, long necks slightly curved, back angled downward, thin dark legs wide as they walk, creating the illusion that it is a slightly resized copy pasted on top of the large one. The yellow patch at the base of their beak is bright, yellow eyes clear, the larger one has fluffier feathers on the back of the head and a curly set of frilly feathers at the base of the tail.
