Hard not to sound snarky on social media, but I mean this with deadly sincerity. I wonder if this how 1914 felt?

The problem isn't that a tiny minority of wealthy, extremely well-educated students want to doomscroll on tiktok rather than read Tolstoy. The problem is that many (most?) students graduate from HS and enter university without being able to follow the thread of a 250 word letter to the editor.

The implication here is that most US students are borderline illiterate when they arrive at college. Two points: 1. Discourse focussing on elite school always distorts what's going on. 2. The reading problem for US (& Canadian) students is much, MUCH worse even than this article suggests.

"The issue that Dames and other professors have observed is distinct from the problem at community colleges and nonselective universities, where some students arrive with literacy and comprehension deficits that can leave them unable to complete collegiate courses. High-achieving students at exclusive schools like Columbia can decode words and sentences. But they struggle to muster the attention or ambition required to immerse themselves in a substantial text."

I think we should stop using the same job title for people who spent days, weeks, months seeking truths and communicating out findings as clearly as possible and people who are good at looking serious while being beautiful.

Clock ticking for when some FedSoc judge declares the ban unconstitutional.

We should start naming hurricanes after fossil fuel companies.

Not sure what's going with the OP, but IME people make this point in discussions about how to allocate scarce transit resources. Want to cut a bus route that *almost* no one uses, to increase service on a badly overcrowded line? You're going to hear this argument.

They are turning our carefully crafted sentences, the ones we read out loud to test their musicality, the ones where we labored for an hour to find one perfect word, the ones where we left the adverb in defiantly, into soulless AI slop that no one enjoys reading, and it breaks me.

Maybe unsurprisingly, I'm looking into this stuff because I'm cranky about some Oxonian readings of the Meditations that don't seem to understand that isolation was a literary device.
