We've all seen this graph, or ones like it, so many times over the years and we still hear guff about scroungers every six weeks or so. It should be printed out in A0 size and hung in every school, media office, job-centre, food bank and government building in the country.

I don’t doubt the validity of the quoted graph but interested in the source.

Believe me, government departments, job centres and food banks are fully aware, as are the mostly oligarch-owned media outlets. Schools are a great starting point though. Get em young.

A policy-relevant graphic would include the resources devoted to combating each type. And translate each figure into taxes paid by the median taxpayer.

It's the same in France, and, I assume, in many other countries.

As with anything requiring logic or common sense, it wouldn't have any effect. This crowd giving guff about scroungers tend to be the same people who think tax is theft. They don't want to crack down on wealthy tax-dodgers. They aspire to join them.

In the US, which has a worse social safety net, a more adversarial tax system (fight for every dollar!), and an under-funded IRS, the uncollected tax figures will be even more lopsided than the UK (your graph) or Ireland.

Shame we haven’t any decent Journalists/Media that could do some actual reporting every time the ‘benefit scrounger’ rhetoric comes out
