I would imagine they pivot to something like discord nitro, but that would have to actually be good otherwise you get Twitter again

I think they're right about advertising never being effective though. The platform is purposely completely open, so if they offer ads it'll be simple for people to serve 3rd party apps without them. It's the same issue Reddit had.

it can be surprisingly cheap to run a social network when your engineers are able to hit the performance targets the bsky team is pulling off (I think they have something like 20 servers total right now? order of magnitude guess anyway. for nontechnical folks that's pretty low for an app this big)

I don't disagree, but advertisers have agendas, and I feel like they want this as agenda free as possible. 🤔
