Have you read the article? Please do it. It's not that long. I find the question 'Are games are better at their story in the middle' one being inherent to games trying to be movies. There are other, so far more unpopular approaches. Florence is one. Dwarfen Fortress another, being generative.
About the last question: Yes, I agree totally. Games can have their own waysss (multiple) to tell stories. Chasing movies is one, but one which causes problems. Games with good *interactive* story telling are to me: Florence, What remains of Edith Finch, Stories Untold They are 1-2 hrs and imo 👌
