The phrase "Appeal to Heaven" is a reference to this passage from Locke's Second Treatise. It refers to the justification that an individual would give for using violence against the established government. An odd position for one of the 9 supposed guardians of the Constitution to take.

And where the body of the people, or any single man, is deprived of their right, or is under the exercise of a power without right, and have no appeal on earth, then they have a liberty to appeal to heaven, whenever they judge the cause of sufficient moment. And therefore, though the people cannot be judge, so as to have, by the constitution of that society, any superior power, to determine and give effective sentence in the case; yet they have, by a law antecedent and paramount to all positive laws of men, reserved that ultimate determination to themselves which belongs to all mankind, where there lies no appeal on earth, viz. to judge, whether they have just cause to make their appeal to heaven. 19]

Locke is saying "you need to try every possible earthly, non-violent mechanism at your disposal to try to remedy any grievances you might have with the standing gov't, but if you decide that's not working then you can always just start shooting (tho I don't advise that) and hope God's on your side."

Well, yes. But let's face it: Justice Alito has been taking some very odd positions for a guardian of the constitution for some time now.

I mean...I get the sentiment. I could even see it being necessary - required! - by the common man under a Trump dynasty. But for a SCOTUS justice, one of the most powerful people in our government, to lay claim to it? Absolute insanity. How do we remove him and Thomas?
