I think it’s only worked for Trump specifically. The closest comparison with him isn’t Reagan but Al Franken, and he barely one his first election.
Well one big difference is none of those people are directly running for president. But I think a bigger issue is all the support and momentum has to filter through 24hr news networks. There's a strong vein of questioning or rejecting or just being skeptical of authority on the left, which is why efforts to create left-wing equivalents of the right-wing infosphere generally fall short. OTOH there's a conservative tendency to follow authority--be it tradition, religion, law. 1/2

I respectfully suggest that the root problem is having a celebrity culture at all.
I think it's a different type of celebrity - more televangelist than movie star or pop star.
Might it just be the assumption that the default for celebrities is liberal, even if it's not necessarily the case?
