In 2011 David Brooks spoke on my campus and he met with the students in my History of American Conservatism class. The students were especially interested in the historically fuzzy boundary between conservatism and the far right, and Brooks dismissively pooh pooh-ed such questions as liberal bias.
David Brooks confesses that 30% of the time he roots for a full tilt fascist takeover & the rest of the time he feels politically at odds with himself “these days I find myself rooting for the Democrats about 70 percent of the time… But my new suit is ill-fitting” www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
A longtime conservative, alienated by Trumpism, tries to come to terms with life on the moderate edge of the Democratic Party.
I hear this all the time about interactions with Brooks. He’s a genius at sucking up when he needs to, we see this all the time on his frequent media appearances, but absolutely no one perceived as below his station gets this benefit.
It was easy for non-Nazi-ish conservatives to bury their heads then.
Anytime someone answers with "[something] bias" and doesn't explain why, it kinda suggests there is no bias and the premise of the Q is more accurate than they'd like.
Books apparently has "I was all prepared to enjoy my trip to Rome but it was full of Italians" as a political philosophy.
Conservative historians of fascism did this to such a great extent that they insisted it was impossible to discuss fascism in a post-war context nonpejoratively
The difference between Adenauer and Hitler is "liberal bias"?!
I understand why he would have taken such questions to be comical from a place of skepticism about the self-understanding of someone like him, but isn’t he supposed to be a UChicago lover of disputation? It was the heyday of the Tea Party, Glenn Beck and Michele Bachman after all.
David Brooks once wrote an entire column based solely on him pulling up to a stoplight and seeing a young Black man with nicer phone than he had.
"People in Blue World are much more conscious of categories than people in Red World are" he says, as the Trump campaign is on a 100% white supremacist roll. 🙄
Would he mind my asking why he's only confessing his fascist leanings to the public now? Had he ever confessed this to his publishers?
