Here is how I write alt text: I imagine the viewer/ reader is playing a text adventure and has just typed "look at picture", then I write what the game would tell them.
I use that exact Spectrum Hobbit screenshot as my Teams background. Good point re the ALT text usage. Text adventures (I think) are highly underutilsed as potential teaching tools. They seem to access a part of the brain that other pedagogical methods can't touch.
