Thank you for sharing/liking this, I really appreciate it. 💖 At long last, I was finally able to get onto someone who listened to me about my circumstances and waived the fee. I will still be getting away from this provider.

A quick guide to drawing archery and archers! It's a couple years old but I think it still holds up and I hope some people find it useful! DISCLAIMER: I'm just an amateur archer, apologies if I get any of the technical terms incorrect! This is a guide for artists, not athletes.

I am an amateur archer! This is not a guide on how to shoot a bow.

BOW SHAPE: The size and shape of the bow will affect its weight, power, and use! Here are a few bow types, from longest to shortest.

Kyūdō Yumi bow: Incredibly long, 7+ feet! Asymmetrical because of size
English Longbow: D shaped. Very long, around 6 feet.
Modern Recurve bow: The flipped up recurve ends add tension, allowing for a shorter length.
Penobscot bow: Used by First Nations peoples, this bow has a second set of limbs to add power without adding length.
Horse Recurve bow: Additional curvature adds tension and therefore power. This allows for a shorter bow that is usable on horseback!
Modern Compound bow
The used of pulleys allows for a very stiff bow, which results in a significant increase in power.
Note: A bow at rest should NOT look like a deep D!
There must be space for the limbs to bend farther back.
Part 2/4 ARROWS!
Arrows are longer than you’d expect! It really depends on the bow and archer, but this is a loose guide: (Line drawing of an arrow lined up along a person’s outstretched arm. Its tip extends beyond the length of their arm, to around their cheekbone/ear)
DRAWING A DRAW: There are many ways to pull a bow back, and vary by archery style.
Bows are *generally* drawn by pulling on the string, NOT THE ARROW. You can not delicately pinch an arrow to draw a bow! If your bow materials are magical, and allow for a delicate draw, it’s a good idea to visually communicate that.
Mediterranean draw
Most common, with variations:
1 finger over, 2 fingers under arrow; 3 fingers under arrow; 2 fingers under arrow
Mongolian/Thumb Draw: Second most common. Use a thumb ring
Other draws include: Torikake Draw - Used in Kyūdō, special glove required
Pinch Draw - Requires incredible finger strength to grip the arrow shaft
Trigger - Use a bow trigger with a compound bow for better consistency
Part 3/4 STANCE!
Drawing a bow takes a lot of strength - bow strength is literally measured in
pounds! A lot goes into proper posture but the basics for every situation are:
straight bow arm, shoulders in line, strong core (no arched back)
(Image references of archers in various settings eg. crouching, horseback, aiming upward. They are all holding their arm-shoulders-arm-elbow in a straight line parallel to the drawnarrow)
Right-handed people usually hold the bow in their left hand. Arrow usually rests on the bow arm side of the bow.

AT REST
A good rule for drawing an archer that has nocked but not yet drawn is to have their palms “facing each other”, with the string on their inner forearm (Various illustrative good and bad examples)
Part 4/4 ACCESSORIES!
Don’t forget to accessorize! Most archery accessories are about protecting a part of your body, so you should match it up with archery style!

For your drawing hand: Images of archery gloves for Mediterranean and Kyudo draw, and an image of a thumb ring for thumb draw

For your bow arm: Images of an arrow rest glove (for shooting a bow without a built in arrow rest) and an archery bracer (to protect the inner forearm – should ideally be smooth)

A note about quivers: Back quivers are less cumbersome when traveling. Side quivers are faster and easier to grab arrows from!
As with all things in fantasy art, there’s room to play with designs when you aren’t limited by the physics and materials of the real world. However, that doesn’t change the core of how archery works! I hope this guide helps you understand the basics of how to thoughtfully draw an archer!

Good luck and have fun drawing!
