I agree that plastic waste is a massive global problem. I fear that there's already so much in the environment that it may be hundreds , maybe thousands, of years to filter it all out. It seems an impossible task as most countries just push their waste onto poorer countries to deal with or bury it.

How do microplastics differ from let's say small mineral particles (from rocks/sand etc) naturally present in the environment?

This falls into the category of issues where we want to ask humanity to modify behaviour in the present, to avoid future destruction. And humanity always responds, "La La La. Oh look. A butterfly". We are short term risk takers, incapable of long term risk calculus with social dimensions. #Doomer

Unfortunately we seem to be trapped in a plastic world…
