It came on suddenly, but as I itched through my garment, I felt the thoughts quell. It seemed to go away. Perhaps it was nothing. Nothing was out of the ordinary. The Garland has stood since before my grandfather's time. Since before the purge, plagues, famine. It stood as a beacon to our modest community. All who stood beneath its watch were safe. "The Garland provides".
But two nights later a thought came unbidden into my mind. I had to go to it. I had to really see it. Not from afar. Not of our idols. The true garland. Those who approached were said to be cast out, disfigured, their minds ruined for their disrespect. Not I. I would see it for its true self. The pricks at the back of my head told me so.
