True story time: when my white mom enrolled me in kindergarten *in the 1980s* the school secretary filled out a required form about me behind her desk as she chatted w/ my mom. She listed my race as “white” without asking and handed the form to my mom to sign….
I have a lot of Afghan students that are listed as white. At least 3 times a year, I'm walking the families through the steps to change it to Asian.
As my mom always told the story (I heard it many times!) she was furious and made the secretary amend it to “black,” and my mom would always relay with this hurt in her voice on my behalf that the secretary defensively mumbled something like, “I was just trying to do you a favor.”
At least one doctor's office has definitely listed my kid, whose dad is Indian American, as white.
