Note the extravagance of P-8 anti-submarine aircraft when the RNZAF has not prosecuted a single submarine target since WW2... We could and should have bought 3-5 more C-130Js which would meet our SAR output perfectly well and provide more air transport flexibility and capability...
...without the type-specific infrastructure that had to be built from scratch at Ohakea... The latest KingAirs are also equipped for inshore SAR, and the Texans can be equipped with sensor pods (should we choose to buy them) for SAR as well....
We were strong armed into buying those P8s. Their range is the biggest tick ✅ I suspect Certainly more comfortable for the crew.
