Better to say "largest fire in recent (say, post WWII) times." Million-acres fires were reported in the panhandle in 1894 and 1895, and1906 had a 6-million acre along with a million-acre burn nearby; and no doubt others. Transitioning from a presettlement fire regime was prone to explosive burns.
