This is Eric, who was saved from ending up in some private collection by a group of people who collectively bought the specimen then donated it to the National Museum, and now resides downstairs in the 100 treasures exibit, nearly directly under the megaloceros mount on the mezzanine floor

Plaque, reads: 'eric' the pliosaur was discovered in 1987 by opal miner Joe Vida. Hundreds of blocks containing the fragmentary fossils were sent to the museum, where it took 450 hours to assemble them. He later became part of the AM's collections in 1993 after he was purchased with donations from Akubra and the school children of Australia. Pliosaurs are short-necked plesiosaurs, aquatic carnivorous reptiles that lived in the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods (about 200-66 mya). Australian opals are mostly formed during the Cretaceous, and Eric's bones -and the fish bones in his stomach- were opalised as he was preserved
Eric specimen of pliosaur, opalised, dorsal view from nose showing whole specimen
Eric, opalised pliosaur specimen showing remains of skull and neck vertebrae
Eric, opalised pliosaur specimen, showing near complete torso and partial forelimbs
