How does being atheist makes you any less respectful

It doesn't. I'm atheist myself. It's a reference to the fact that this week's data shows more of UK are atheists than believe in a god. But being atheists doesn't mean we abandon the compassion & morals of a previously Christian society. Christianity doesn't have a monopoly on compassion.
