So, within American fundamentalism and Protestantism the main struggle (dialectic? maybe) is "old light-new light". New Light people were revivalists and all about personal acceptance of Jesus as essential. Old Light Christians were suspicious of the lack of rigor, the wild reveries, and DIY nature.

All that to say, at least within the Religious Right, there's a dance between "getting vibed out at a revival and seeing Jesus, speaking in tongues, making new theology" and "crusty logic of theocracy". Jam Bands/Megachurches vs FedSoc, if you will. Both can be amenable to cultural conservatism.
