I was a contractor when I had my cancer diagnosis, coming to the end of the contract. I can clearly remember my boss saying "we've got to be compassionate, but also commercial" and then didn't manage to get my contract extended! Fortunately I was okay financially, which was just as well...

Terrible. My job was kept open for me, even though I had only been there just over a year.
