Except that Union victory ended around 850k deaths, emboldened US interventionism, ultimately in WW1, leading to the rise of Hitler, the Holocaust, etc. If the Union had only let Ft Sumter go and the Confederacy fail or reform on its own, what lesser human toll overall would it have been?

I said no war between sides A and B. People inside A have their own definitions, and peace with B is conditional on not interfering internally to A.

If *today* a state like Texas or New Hampshire wishes to break away with consent of its population, should the Federal governments or people in the other states be able to prevent such divorce? Or would they be traitors for daring to ask? I though individuals could leave marriages? Silly me.
