Spot on. Have been a head for ten years. Every year has allowed me to develop greater wisdom in how to do the job. MATs are now populated with younger heads of school with energy and vigour, but perhaps not the understanding of what to do and how to do it. A hole is developing.

Interesting and thought provoking. I sort of think this is part of the whole recruitment problem in teaching - we're struggling to get good people into roles from class to head teacher and, as a profession, are trying to do more with less.

A really interesting read. Thank you! I am seven years in post, fortunate to still love and appreciate it greatly. I agree that it takes at least 3-4 years to learn the thing i.e. better know the role and the community you represent. Also know that I am still learning about it all every single week.

A really good read. I left headship in the independent sector in 2022; at the time it was something I really needed to do for my own wellbeing. I enjoy the freedom I have now, but sometimes I really miss it, especially those big times of the year that are so magical in primary. But plenty I don't🤷‍♂️

I'm curious what your MAT looks for in terms of 'proven track record of school improvement'? Is that in one setting/ context or more? Does it take into account a track record of successful financial and personnel management of the school?
