Finally got around to exploring the abandoned 18 Arhats Cave in Keelung. The tunnel system is surprisingly extensive and labyrinthine, and conditions inside were not too bad despite the passage of decades. Still have to dig into the origins of this place; was it a military bunker?

An abandoned tunnel, painted white, with some alcoves on the right concealing dioramas from Chinese mythology.
Statues of two monks evoking the "uncanny valley" effect. They have yellow robes and are covered with corrosion. The one on the right has also been separated from his feet.
A miniature tower in an underground tunnel based on the Legend of the White Snake. The snake is looking out from a window on the second level. Some characters from Journey to the West appear on the roof of the tower.
A scene inside a former attraction in a tunnel, this one depicting a warship named Yong Feng. What looks to be crew members can be discerned in the murky brown water flooding the bottom of the diorama.

If you've ever played one of those dungeon crawler games from the 80s/90s, the experience of heading into these tunnels was eerily similar, especially with all the 90-degree turns. It would be interesting to see a map of the place... might have to break out the grid paper for a return visit.
