Two businessmen accused of corruption in separate high-profile cases were involved in a broader prisoner swap today between the US and Venezuela, the White House announced.

Under the swap, Alex Saab, a Colombian businessman charged in the US with laundering money derived from a bribery scheme, will be sent to Venezuela, while Leonard Francis, a Malaysian who was the mastermind of a scheme to bribe officers of the US Navy, will be returned to the US for sentencing, senior Biden administration officials said. Ten Americans held in Venezuela will also come home, and 20 Venezuelan political prisoners will be released from Venezuelan custody.

“Reuniting wrongfully detained Americans with their loved ones has been a priority for my administration since day one. As is the return to the United States of fugitives from justice,” President Joe Biden said in a statement.
