Today's my favorite day! It's the Local Political Economy Conference (LPEC). I'm presenting work w Tyler Simko and Rebecca Johnson on Measuring Conflict in Local Politics. Can't wait to nerd out all day! Huge thanks to @trounstine.bsky.social for all her work to build this community

Many of the most tangible and immediate political conflicts in American’s
lives occur at the local level. Yet, we know far less about how, why, and where
conflict occurs in local governments. In this paper, we present a new dataset of
nearly 100, 000 school board meetings, and a new measure of political conflict,
based on dictionaries and word embeddings. We document three key findings:
conflict in school board meetings (1) occurs frequently, (2) is often issue driven
and related to national events, but (3) the most intense conflicts are concen-
trated in small numbers of districts, with policymaking in many school districts
seeing little to no conflict at all.

With color palettes, the situation has improved in recent years, but just in case: jfly.uni-koeln.de/html/manuals... And in case one is not sure what works, there are color blindness simulators available, including free online ones.
