Uwe Boll is the master of getting shit funded. My understanding is his movies have usually had their budget covered through distribution deals before he even starts making them
This is exactly what I said. If I give you a million to make a movie and then write that off my taxes I haven't actually made any money. I only make money if the movie makes money
I doubt he has said that. The quirk in German law was movie investments can be fully deducted from your tax and only profits are taxed. So it's a risk free investment if you have taxes to deduct, but you still don't make anything unless the movie makes money
I don't understand the question. Even if they don't believe in a movie and expect it to lose money I'm just saying they prefer for it to make money. Making money is always better than tax write offs which are mostly loss mitigation
Okay I can certainly see this being abused to reduce tax burden, but fact remains they'd still have more money if the movie just makes money
This doesn't make sense. If the show actually makes money that's always better than a tax write off which can at most erase a loss, unless there's some illegal accounting
The tax write offs are loss mitigation. Unless they're doing some illegal accounting the best a write off can do is erase the loss
That's not how it works. They don't go into a movie intending for it to bomb
I saw it yesterday. It's a musical ass musical lol. Lots of bizarre choices were made, but I can guarantee Warner Bros do not want to lose their shirt on any movie they make
