It turns out that the constituency for retreating on net zero and saying you will keep cutting public spending until you can completely eradicate national insurance is not as large as the one Boris got by saying he would do net zero, increasing spending on police, hospitals and schools. Who knew?

That's a great article. To what degree do you think it's: Tory MPs drifting rightwards vs Tory MPs now free to speak? Because if they have to change the actual MPs rather than their minds, the problem would seem to be about selection procedures rather than strategy.

they do this over and over again. they spend years dragging themselves into the centre, cautiously get in, then instead of holding the line they lurch away and don't understand that they won't be followed. why don't they learn? baffling.

Interestingly, the Courtier Press who have only recently stopped running pieces about Johnson returning are pretty much the same people encouraging Sunak to abandon his policies.
