However short or long, that the person who asks six questions at PMQs, whose proxies get guaranteed slots on our broadcasters, will have done a 'you know the type of cultures I'm talking about' pitch in their campaign and will major on it heavily is bad, not good, for the UK's politics.

They've both done this, right?

Agreed

I also think the victory laps and high-fiving are very "Clinton 2016" from people who really don't have the track record in the bank to say that they and their guy are really good at dealing with a soundbite friendly right winger who is visibly having a good time.

And whose party still represents people in a fifth of the country, whose MPs are responsible for casework for thousands of people whose worth is apparently up for question

Putting a positive spin on this, that sort of attitude towards immigration and different cultures is a minority position. If they start a fight about it then fine, let's have that fight and beat them rather than engaging in appeasement.

Spot on. So many left wing potential supporters of STT.V were of the view that "it doesn't matter because Labour will win anyway". We could've had Lib Dem HMLO if people could be a bit smarter. Instead we're gonna have... this.

I guess we will find out how much the moderate Tories will tolerate before deciding it is bad for our politics. I don't hold out much hope, the one nation group of MPs have been pretty poor at speaking out up to now

Pretty grim. How far they can pull the envelope of acceptability for such things before being defenestrated will be appalling to witness. Is there any hint cleverly tried the ‘lend some votes to the one I can beat’ tactic. I’m assuming not but nominative determinism is not strong with tories atm.

My unfounded opinion is, it feels like Badenoch would go up like a firework and the Tories will be doing it all again in 12 months, whereas Jenrick would be some drawn out torture lasting up to the next election.

I suspect that they’ll come across terribly at PMQs (Jenrick tainted by Tower Hamlets, Badenoch basically pitching to true believers), but if there’s an economic shock of some kind then there’s a real shot of them becoming PM. Which is deeply unhealthy.
