Todays stories that govt will rejig the financial rules to enable much more capital spending could be the best news for housing for years. Lots of challenges in delivery but public housing investment is the key to tackling the housing crisis and homelessness - and will achieve real growth.

There are many different ways to achieve it, but everyone in housing knows that all the sound policies announced so far will fail to tackle the housing emergency without a significant & sustained increase in public housing investment. It will meet need, reduce wasteful spending, and boost growth.

📢 Even very high levels of 'growth' unlikely to address poverty.   Our research shows that a strong economy alone will not move the dial on poverty during this parliament.   The government must include poverty reduction as part of its approach to long term and lasting growth. 1/4

"The government's current approach not only risks leaving millions behind who can least afford it, it also risks failing on its own terms to deliver sustained and resilient economic growth. Unless business investment is matched with stronger social foundations from the start, growth will be harder to achieve now, and easier to lose to the next economic shock." Alfie Stirling, Director of Policy and Insight, and Chief Economist.
