I can agree to this pretty much. I'm into Sonic but at the same time I just really like all kinds of video games. Though at the same time it's somewhat flattering when people come to ask me about Sonic stuff since I'm the "Sonic guy" in some groups.
I haven't kept up with the fandom that much anymore. There are many new faces which is cool, but also I don't actively seek out Sonic fan material. I still enjoy Sonic as much as ever and I'm content on going at my own pace and dedicate time for other stuff as well.
But I do love talking with Sonic fans irl at conventions etc. It's always a blast to have a conversation about Sonic with fellow fans in the flesh.
I've never been actively involved with the Sonic fandom. I could talk about Sonic for hours but don't usually feel like talking about it on social media or replying to posts since it can be quite rough. I don't feel it's an absolute must to be an active member of a fandom.
