i am saying civility is a richer topic than appears if we restrict ourselves to the perfectly legitimate sense of standards of decorum. in a way, i am turning from a deontological angle to one focused on virtue as strength or capacity or power, with the attendant ingredient of a telos.

there are other ways to think about civility as a virtue instead of a norm. R Talisse's bk is an example. RTs approach is more about cognitive pragmatics than the "world building" angle i've tried to suggest here. global.oup.com/academic/pro...
