I love the storytelling of all the clutter and details in the room. The older carvings in particular are a really nice touch!
Discworld elves are terrifying, in the same way that the local folk tales and ghost stories were when our parents told us them as kids. I still get chills rereading Lords and Ladies. Pratchett manages to get that balance between humour and terror just right enough to be unsettling.
I always thought the "superior" attitude of Tolkien elves was a large part of why their society was declining/waning and leaving the world. In their "youth" they're seen as passionate about art, languages, and learning... and then decide they've mastered it all and cut themselves off from the world.
Before anyone gets their hopes up, it doesn't appear to be true.
