Extraordinarily good news: Crystal Mason, the Texas woman who was sentenced to five years in prison in Texas for voting while on probation, was acquitted today!
Appeals court rules Mason, now 49, did not know she was ineligible when she voted in 2016 and throws out conviction
Great for her, and it still doesn’t excuse Paxton getting off so easily.
What bullshit she even had to go through this. I'm glad she's free, but it doesn't erase the damage the state did to her and should be required to provide restitution for. This was an utterly malicious abuse of state powers, and someone needs to be held accountable for that.
Hell yeah! 🥰
Finally! What an awful ordeal for a legitimate mistake.
When I clerked an election, we had a very nice old lady come in with her election card and say she didn't remember if she voted already. We had her fill out a provisional ballot - BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT PROVISIONAL BALLOTS ARE FOR. Mason was prosecuted for provisionally voting while black.
White voters, often on the right, including the son of my state's governor. voted or tried to vote illegally and got nothing or slap on the wrist. This woman's prosecution was part of a broader voter suppression effort of likely Dem voters that we are seeing all over the country in red states.
“Mason, who has remained out of prison on an appeal bond... “I was thrown into this fight for voting rights and will keep swinging to ensure no other citizen has to face what I’ve faced and endured for the past seven years, a political ploy where minority voting rights are under attack,” she added.”
Moments like this give me hope
Strong Che energy. Hasta la victoria siempre.
Excellent! A bit of decency, a tiny whiff of the rule of law... in Texas.
