"Venom" is the name of the symbiote because he has venomous fangs, unlike most symbiotes. Eddie used the name for the combined form to hide his identity originally, then kept using it out of habit when he went public. It was definitely a retcon, but that was their reasoning.
They're just wrong, is all. The Discovery feed uses the same kind of algorithm as Twitter, suggesting tweets that are identified as similar to ones you have previously liked.
