That illustrates the real and growing impact of the CO2 we release into the atmosphere. That energy imbalance is all FUTURE warming, already guaranteed. The earth has to warm up to reach thermal equilibrium again, when energy arriving equals energy leaving. But our energy imbalance is growing.

An average energy imbalance of 1W per square metre is equivalent to 102,000 5GW nuclear reactors operating continuously to heat the oceans, melt the ice, with a little over to warm the surface and atmosphere. The current energy imbalance is 1.2W per m2 and increasing exponentially.
