slogans are problematic: the first one (War Is Peace) unnecessarily reveals the Party's idea of never-ending war as a means to keep solidarity up, the second one (Freedom Is Slavery) does the same (does anyone really want to give away their freedom; why even use this positive term?), the 12/x

third one (Ignorance is Strength) is way too difficult for mass indoctrination - and why should ignorance be strength anyway? Then the diary. Orwell describes it in detail: it has "a red back and a marbled cover". It is a beautiful object in a very bleak and utterly ugly world. Orwell knew 13/x
