Even if you set expectations, negotiate & commit to them, it’s likely that both manager & direct report were wrong about how much could get done, & things changed by the time the expectations were to be met. Orienting towards learning & improvement can mean that people fail & it’s not catastrophic.

When a direct report has no thoughts about what they should be doing, they’re junior & not ready for a promotion, but when a manager has no thoughts on what their direct report should be doing, the direct report should come up with solutions & be “proactive” -Build Better Games The double standard!
