I guess to most Americans the Middle East is not a place with people who have lives and feelings as complex as their own. Just a place to bomb at intervals.

That's probably true. Also, most Americans think every problem either has an easy, obvious fix or else it's completely unsolvable forever.

To my mind, this is compounded by the shortage of Middle Eastern voices in the media. It makes a massive difference if people see just one individual whom they can identify with talking about what it's like to be caught up in that violence.
