Don't understand how a city of 4 million (?) in the country's wealthiest state can't support a newspaper with subsidies of some kind.

I think the NYT bears a large part of blame for this. Since 2015-2016 they have made a concerted effort to be a national paper when it’s never been one. Ppl left their city local paper and got the times
