So what to call them? We wanted to avoid eponyms, and they are superficially similar to other all-dark Ardenna shearwaters. In the end, we settled on "Sable Shearwater" for their dark colour (with a double meaning as they nest in sand, which is "sable" in French)

Crossing nearly 50 nations/territories & hundreds of cultural and linguistic groups, adopting an Indigenous name wouldn't have been appropriate. It can also put undue burden on Traditional Owners to come up with a new name (for a taxonomic concept they may or may not recognize!)
