Ofc you all know that the Spanish claimed Florida early on, and that settlements of Europeans, first Spanish and then English, from the Caribbean were maintained throughout the colonial period. Remember Dido Belle? Her mother seems to have been pensioned in FL.

But lots of southern FL isn't especially inviting to European-style settlement. It's swamp. The Everglades are a fraction of their original expanse. Lush, amazing ecosystem, and an important storm buffer, but inconvenient (to Europeans).
